The story
After the Nazis had taken France they would stop at nothing to take the Channel Islands. The Island was no where near as powerful as the German Army that had sprung upon them. Once Hitler was sure that the Islands were secure he ordered that under no circumstances must the Allies take back the Channel Islands. This wall of defences was to be called "the Atlantic Wall". And so work began constructing concrete bunkers all over the Islands. Then came D-Day-the turning point in the war.As the Allies pushed furthe and further in to France, supply drops to the Islands slowly came to a halt. This effectivly starved out the German forces defending the Island and drove them to surrender in 1945. After the war all guns were thrown over the cliffs at Les Landes and the bunkers seald for public safety. However some guns that were too hard to move were left in position with the bunkers left open.It was possible for kids to go in and fire a shell from the gun! After this happening a few times and many injuries occuring all bunker complexes were filled in,cemented shut or locked with a grille gate.
More recently people have broke in and vandalised the inteiriors making the island seem a bit of a mess for walkers who are visiting the Island.
The CIOS has restored a total of nine of these unique structures and open them to the public on a regular basis.
